Topic: PDF/Archive – Protecting your Electronic Assets

In this session, we will introduce the PDF/Archive (PDF/A) standard ISO 19005-1, Document management – Electronic document file format for long-term preservation – Part 1: Use of PDF 1.4. In addition to discussing the standard and how organizations can use it, we will also discuss some of the known pending legislation which is attempting to mandate the use of PDF/A for preservation of electronic documents. Standards evolve along with the industry, we will provide a glimpse into the future for PDF/A as well as archiving engineering and geospatial documents which present unique requirements.

Attendees will learn about:

  • Reasons why a variation of PDF is needed for long-term preservation
  • PDF/A file format and how and when to use it
  • Pending legislation
  • Creating PDF/A files

About the speaker: Betsy Fanning

Betsy Fanning is the director of Standards and Member Services for AIIM. In this position, she is responsible for the standards and technical reports produced by AIIM as ANSI (American National Standards), ISO, and AIIM Recommended Practices as well Best Practices. At the international level, she is the secretary for ISO TC 171, Document Management Applications and ISO TC 171 Subcommittee 2, Application Issues and is the administrator for the U. S. Technical Advisory Group to TC 171 that represents the United States at the international meetings. She is also responsible for building liaison relationships with other standards development organizations and is a member of a number of ANSI committees. Additionally, she is responsible for professional membership and chapter relations for AIIM.

Prior to coming to AIIM, Betsy held positions with DynSolutions, a Correspondence, Document and Records Management Company, and Westinghouse Electric. In both of these companies, she has implemented imaging, workflow and document management systems. In 1994, Betsy was awarded AIIM's Distinguished Service Citation and was inducted into AIIM's Company of Fellows in 2008. Betsy has a Masters in Library Science from the University of Pittsburgh and a Bachelor of Science in Education specializing in Library and Information Sciences from Clarion State University.

About the AIIM Chapter in Tulsa

The Oklahoma Chapter of AIIM has met in various locations throughout Tulsa since its inception in 1985.

Currently meeting at the Tulsa Country Club near downtown Tulsa, AIIM Oklahoma hopes to benefit from the more centralized location.

Cost is $15 for members of AIIM or ARMA and $20 for nonmembers. Payment by cash or check is accepted at the door.
